Lent 2024

ASH WEDNESDAY

February 14, 2024 at 5:30pm

All are invited to this combined service with three congregations: First Lutheran Church of Blue Island and St. Peter and St. Paul Lutheran Church.

On Ash Wednesday we begin our forty-day journey toward Easter with a day of fasting and repentance. Marking our foreheads with dust, we acknowledge that we die and return to the earth. At the same time, the dust traces the life-giving cross indelibly marked on our foreheads at baptism. While we journey through Lent to return to God, we have already been reconciled to God through Christ. We humbly pray for God to make our hearts clean while we rejoice that “now is the day of salvation.” Returning to our baptismal call, we more intentionally bear the fruits of mercy and justice in the world

LENT GIVING PROJECT

This year, we are collaborating to share five Lenten Community Meals together with the Migrant and Food Ministry of the Multi Ethnic Church of Mt. Greenwood.

Lent is traditionally a time when Christians turn back to God not only through prayer and fasting, but also through sacrificial giving and works of love. These meals offer us a chance to turn to God by giving of what we have, as well as to meet Christ in our neighbors, and be transformed by relationship!

Come as you are and/or help us with one of these volunteer opportunities:
  • - Sign up one or multiple weeks to bring a dish, dessert or drink
  • - Help set up at 6pm and/or clean up
  • - Help warm up donated food ahead of time
  • - Lead the group in opening or closing prayer

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities.

Lenten Calendar
Pray, Give, Fast

Lent is a Christian season of preparation and repentance.
We spend time in prayer and look for ways that we have wandered away from God. We "return to the Lord our God" through spiritual practices like those you'll find on this calendar - praying, giving, and fasting.
