Lent 2026

ASH WEDNESDAY

March 18, 2026 at 5:00 pm

On Ash Wednesday we begin our forty-day journey toward Easter with a day of fasting and repentance. Marking our foreheads with dust, we acknowledge that we die and return to the earth. At the same time, the dust traces the life-giving cross indelibly marked on our foreheads at baptism. While we journey through Lent to return to God, we have already been reconciled to God through Christ. We humbly pray for God to make our hearts clean while we rejoice that “now is the day of salvation.” Returning to our baptismal call, we more intentionally bear the fruits of mercy and justice in the world

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

Lenten Bible Study will be on Wednesdays at 10am at the church and will focus on exploring Holy Communion using the Bible studies and the “A Place for You” Resource from Daniel Erlander. Join all five weeks or drop in for one or more.

These studies will take place  from February 19th - April 9th:

We'd love for you to join us!

LENT GIVING GOAL:
 2000 diapers by Easter

Picture
Lent is traditionally a time when Christians turn back to God not only through prayer and fasting, but also through giving works of love. This year we're invited to give to the youngest neighbors in our community (babies!) by partnering with the nonprofit "Gifts from Liam" to help families in the southwest suburbs choosing between food and diapers.

Our goal is 2000 diapers by Easter.

How to give

If bringing DIAPERS, please drop off to the church office or on Sundays, place them on the rolling cart in the narthex.
TO GIVE MONETARY DONATIONS:

Make CHECKS payable to First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Blue Island. In the memo section, write “Lent Giving 2026.” Place your gift in the offering plate.
Please leave CASH in an envelope and indicate “Lent Giving 2026” on the envelope or in a note inside the envelope. Please indicate your name on the envelope as well if you would like it counted towards your tax receipt at the end of the year.
To give ONLINE, select the green “GIVE” button on firstlutheranbi.org. In the dropdown menu, select either “Lent Giving 2026”  or “Diaper Drive.”  We invite you to please select the box that would cover processing fees.

Lenten Calendar
Pray, Give, Fast

Lent is a Christian season of preparation and repentance.
We spend time in prayer and look for ways that we have wandered away from God. We "return to the Lord our God" through spiritual practices like those you'll find on this calendar - praying, giving, and fasting.
